The Race to Reef: How Formula Drift Is Bringing a New Generation to Scuba Diving
Race to Reef: Where the adrenaline of Formula Drift meets the serenity of scuba diving
SSI and Mares have teamed up with Formula Drift driver Kasey Kohl and Aquanauts Grenada to launch Race to Reef — a bold initiative connecting the adrenaline of motorsports with the wonder of underwater exploration.
When Drifting Meets Diving
What happens when a Formula Drift driver, a scuba certification agency, and a dive equipment manufacturer walk into a room? You get the Race to Reef initiative — one of the most creative crossover campaigns the dive industry has seen in years.
Announced in late April 2026, Race to Reef is a partnership between Scuba Schools International (SSI), Mares, Formula Drift racer Kasey Kohl (Mspek Performance), and Aquanauts Grenada. The goal? To bridge the gap between high-adrenaline motorsports and the serene-yet-thrilling world of scuba diving.
The Vision Behind Race to Reef
Kasey Kohl, a rising star in Formula Drift, sums it up best: "Whether you are initiating a drift at over 70 miles per hour or descending 70 feet below the surface, there is a shared sense of focus, adrenaline, and individuality. Both are environments where you are fully immersed."
The initiative creates a seamless pathway from racetrack engagement to real-world dive experiences. At each Formula Drift event throughout the 2026 season, fans can interact with a fully branded dive display featuring Mares equipment, try interactive content, scan live QR codes, and most excitingly, register to win a Dive and Drift trip to Grenada.
Dive and Drift: The Ultimate Giveaway
One lucky fan will win a trip to Grenada from November 1-8, 2026, hosted by Aquanauts Grenada and True Blue Bay Resort. The prize includes diving alongside Kasey Kohl himself, experiencing the vibrant marine ecosystems of the Caribbean, and a drift ride of a lifetime.
This marks a strategic shift for both SSI and Mares as they actively engage consumers beyond the traditional dive audience. By tapping into the motorsports community — a demographic already drawn to high-focus, high-performance experiences — Race to Reef opens up a fresh pipeline for dive centers and training facilities to attract new students.
What This Means for Dive Centers
For dive professionals and training centers in Indonesia and beyond, Race to Reef represents a new template for outreach. The campaign demonstrates how partnering with unexpected industries — motorsports, gaming, adventure sports — can drive awareness and enrollment.
SSI North America Marketing Manager Rachael Steidley emphasized the strategy: "We are focused on helping our Training Centers and retailers grow by reaching new audiences in new ways." Each Race to Reef activation includes immersive on-site experiences, live giveaways, and direct pathways to SSI training centers.
Why This Matters for Indonesian Divers
Indonesia is home to some of the world's best diving — from Raja Ampat to Komodo, Bunaken to Wakatobi. Cross-industry campaigns like Race to Reef remind us that the dive community needs to keep innovating in how we welcome new people to the sport. Whether it is through motorsports, social media, or local community events, the future of diving depends on making the underwater world accessible to everyone.
