The Sherwood Magnum is a no-nonsense workhorse BCD that prioritizes comfort and reliability over flashy features. It's not the lightest or most modern design, but after 30+ dives in temperatures ranging from chilly Java Sea to warm Bali reefs, it delivers where it matters.

The Old-School Workhorse
The Sherwood Magnum BCD reminds me of a Toyota Land Cruiser — it's not the flashiest thing on the boat, but it'll get you through a thousand dives without complaint. This is a traditional jacket-style BCD with thoughtful touches that show decades of dive gear design experience. After logging 30+ dives across locations from the chilly waters of Pulau Seribu to warm Bali reefs, here's my honest take.
Comfort & Fit
The first thing you notice when you put this BCD on is the padding. The shoulders and back are generously padded, and the semi-hard backpack provides structure without feeling like you're wearing a plastic shell. I found the fit excellent for extended diving — no hot spots or chafing even during 4-dive days with heavy AL80 tanks. The cummerbund wraps around securely without that 'bear hug' feeling some jacket BCDs create when fully inflated.
The torso length adjustment is simple and effective. I'm average height (175cm), and the Magnum fit well without riding up. The shoulder straps stay put without constant readjustment, and even with a 5mm wetsuit, getting the right fit took about 30 seconds.
Weight System & Trim
The integrated weight system holds about 20 pounds in the quick-release pockets. These dump smoothly in an emergency — I tested both sides on a shallow training dive and they released cleanly with a single pull. Two trim weight pouches on the tank band let you fine-tune balance.
In the water, the Magnum has that classic BCD feel — not as streamlined as a back-inflate wing, but stable and predictable. Buoyancy control is responsive, and the jacket design keeps you in a natural upright position at the surface. Underwater, it's not as sleek as a modern back-inflate, but the tradeoff is a familiar, forgiving feel that inspires confidence.
Inflator & Dump Systems
The power inflator is ergonomically shaped and easy to operate. Dump valves are well-placed: over-the-shoulder dump at the top left, rear dump at the lower left, and pull-dump on the inflator hose. All work reliably, though the shoulder dump can be slightly stiff when new (loosens up after a few dives).
Two large zippered pockets provide ample storage for SMB, slate, spare mask. Small zippered pocket on the right chest fits a whistle or compass. Two D-rings per side give attachment points. It's not overloaded like tech BCDs, but for recreational diving it's more than adequate.
Long-Term Durability
The nylon fabric and stitching have held up well. After 30+ dives and repeated saltwater rinses, zippers glide smoothly and Velcro attachments still grip firmly. The bladder remains leak-free. Sherwood's durability reputation is well-earned — I've heard from divers with 5+ years on their Magnum BCDs with no issues beyond routine servicing.
